ICYMI: Trikk

Ahead of his Australian debut tour, Marli Grosskoppf makes a good case for why Trikk might just be the most underrated producer on the Innervisions roster today…

Whether or not you’re well versed in the tech-house talent coming out of Porto in Northern Portugal, there’s one front running name that you’ll want to familiarize yourself with, if you haven’t already.

Trikk is the passion project of B. Deodato, hailing from Porto to Portuguese and Mozambican parents, who set sail for London a few years ago to pursue his love for making music. Planting his feet firmly in the genres of techno (edging on minimal and deep house), Trikk prides his production style as being one that focuses on simplistic percussive patterns and familiar vintage synthesizers, executed with laser precision for maximal d-floor efficiency. The typical ‘Trikk’ sound is one that uses world instrumentation (a metaphorical nod of respect to his fathers African heritage) to paint a soundscape that eloquently fuses techno and minimal to the more traditional genres that he grew up on.

With critically acclaimed releases on labels such as ManMakeMusic, Drumcode, and Lossless, his standout career moment thus far would have to be his initiation into the Innervisions family with his 2016 EP ‘Florista’. Founding fathers of the Innervisions label, Amê and Dixon, saw nothing but immense talent within this Portuguese powerhouse, featuring his work in their recent live sets which opened up the floodgates to new fans, and recognition from fellow tech-heavyweights such as Tale Of Us and Solomun.  His most recent project, also released on Innervisions label, titled ‘Vilara is an epic continuation on his streak of success and his exploration into pushing the boundaries of techno.

Trikk has recently relocated to the belly of the beast that is the city of Berlin, taking with him the sonic elements from all his inspirational influences. To warm us up for his Australian debut this November, lets take a look at the top 3 Trikk releases…

Trikk – Bela

Released in 2016 with Innervisions, this track sounds like an organically processed production that you’d hear on the dirtiest of dance floors. Overflowing with perfectly syncopated percussion, and subby bass lines that seem to stretch for an eternity, this is the kind of techno that’s loved by those who don’t really love techno, and played a million times over by those who do.

Trikk - Basement Traxx

Trikk paints himself in a more deep-housey light with this track released by ManMakeMusic in 2013. Complete with a Roland 909-esque kick drum, a heavily filtered soul vocal sample and stabby chords reminiscent of the Detroit techno movement, this track is enough to make you fall in love with Trikk all over again. Even more impressive is that this came out during the very early days of his career.

Trikk - Devila

This most recent project from Trikk, again released on Innervisions record label is a unique, well crafted, synopsis of what he represents. The use of live drums in conjunction with arpeggiated modular synthesizers and an eerie nostalgic chord progression, arguably encompasses various opposing genres in one. This latest 12” release is an audible maturation from the works he released in his formative years, steering further toward the direction of careful and unique sound selection that can’t quite be compared to anyone else in the game today.
