The five track package will be released on Jeniffer Cardini’s Dischi Autunno imprint…

The 2018 debut album from Curses, ‘Romantic Fiction’, also released on Dischi Autunno, was one of our favourite released of that year. It was a thrilling ride into late eighties and early nineties aesthetics threading post-punk, new wave and modern-day techno which really appealed to this writer’s Generation X sensibilities.

The opening single ‘Surrender’ was arguably the album’s sweetest moment, and when you listen to it, you can’t help but just do that. The smooth bassline, Curses’ lost-in-the-fog vocals, and a post-punk rhythm all coalesced into something that will make you ponder about the meaning of life and that thing you said the other day you probably shouldn't have said? It's music to ponder too. And when he sings ‘Alone. Together Alone’ you can’t help but feel like ‘yeah, you know what, I’m not alone… or I am, but there are other people alone with me, like Curses’ or something like that. You get the drift, it’s introspective, but it is also the sort of song you can imagine hearing at your local live music venue being performed by a three-piece band sporting black army boots, no sleeved t-shirts and slicked back hair.

It makes sense then that the next single to be taken from the album is the self-titled ‘Surrender’. And the remix package accompanying it is suitably strong too.

Our pick of the bunch is Djedjotronic’s synth-ridden breakbeat that retains the brooding air of the original while adding a serious dose of groove. Label boss Jennifer Cardini ups the tempo with one foot firmly planted in the eighties, massive toms breaking the track into almost radio-friendly sections while Cardini keeps building the track to its breaking point. The Eva Geist & Steve Pepe remix slow things down into a swirling drawl, Curses vocals sedated by Xanax and stretched into a broken dream. For something a bit harder look no further than the on-edge remix from David Vunk, filled with ominous sounds and an almost distorted bottom end this one should please those looking to punch boxing bags.

If you haven’t joined the cult of Curses as yet, now is the time to become a card carrying member.

Curses’ forthcoming single on Dischi Autunno is out on April 19.
