Local Form: Ingrid

A musical chameleon, an entrepreneurial spearhead, and a creative powerhouse, Melbourne based artist Ingrid is a god damn force to be reckoned with…

Ingrid is one third of The Love Above collective alongside her wax partners in crime Ryan Berkeley and Dawn Again, and a name you’d know if you've frequented any of Melbourne’s most popular watering holes. I’m talking Boney, The Night Cat, Lounge (RIP), Xe54, Dr Morse, the Gasometer, you name it, she’s thrown some down and mixed it there - and done a mighty good job of gathering a crowd of avid punters in the process.

Her exclusively vinyl sets continually assert her status within the musical “mice v. men” debate (obviously placing herself within the latter of the two hypothetical categories, but without all the gender exclusivity because it’s 2019 and we’re better than that). Harbouring the emotional richness of a more soulful yesteryear, Ingrid’s disco/funk oriented selections duck in and out of vintage tracks only known by those who’ve spent hours upon hours crate digging, into more modern productions by local up and comers, all the whilst maintaining an effortless good vibe throughout.

Ahead of The Love Above’s upcoming showcase at Boney, and the label’s monthly residency at the relentlessly bustling Rooftop Bar, Ingrid had a chat to us about some of her favourite tunes: the first tracks she ever bought, a classic track she loves, and a current track she can’t stop listening to.

FIRST: ST GERMAIN - BOULEVARD

This is, in my opinion, one of the greatest and most timeless albums ever made. As a huge house music lover, it never leaves my record bag (and I don’t think it ever will). Perfect for any bar gig, and a great club opener; This is definitely one of my favourite records in my collection - the perfect mixture of dusty sounds, jazzy rhythms and elegance.’

CLASSIC: GURU - LOUNGIN

Jazzmatazz Volume 1 is definitely a classic for me. I play it regularly. Guru is my favourite rapper hands down, and this album incorporates some of the best jazz musicians in history, for e.g. Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers and Lonnie Liston Smith. This track Loungin is my favourite. No one can do it like Guru can.’

CURRENT: PERISHING THIRST - ENHANCE

‘Hardest question ever. This changes almost every day haha. I recently ordered a record from the Canadian label NAFF. The album, Pilgrims of the Rinde - Perishing Thirst. I really dig the whole album, it’s a mixture of genres including downtempo, ambient, electronic, house and breaks…. A bit of everything really, but it holds that dreamy signature Canadian sound that is circulating a lot lately. This track Enhance, is a banger! ‘
