SIX FOR ONE: Dream Coast

Fans of Kiasmos and Jon Hopkins should pay attention to Dream Coast…

Blowing in on the wings of a light Queensland breeze is the introspective sounds of the duo known as Dream Coast. Only a couple of years into their journey, they have already received attention from all the local tastemakers: Triple J, Unearthed, Triple R, Happy Mag, Purple Sneakers and Stoney Roads all picked up on their 2018 debut album Golden Haze. Adding to their recent string of hypnotic club performances and Arcadia Festival set, is the news that they’ve been added to the upcoming industry event BIGSOUND. This is in support of their new single ‘Weightless’ (have a listen at end of article), a relaxed piece of electronica which is soothing and uplifting in equal doses. Before their BIGSOUND performance, Dream Coast’s Joshua Bowling found some time to chat with us about 6 tracks that are important to their sound…

A track that played a huge influence on our new single ‘Weightless’...

Stephan Bodzin - Sungam (Rodriguez Jr. Remix)

‘Although ‘Weightless’ sounds very different now, we sat down with the gear and wanted to make a euphoric slow-burner for a set. We wanted to have a Stephan Bodzin-esque bassline that evolves and steers the song into having an uplifting outro. The Rodriguez Jr.  remix of ‘Sungam’ helped us find a bit of direction with structuring. Listen to an early version of ‘Weightless’ here (This shows how the main melody changed too!)

We both agree that this track is incredible…

Tangerine Dream - Horizon (Warsaw Gate Mix)

‘The layering and build in Tangerine Dream - Horizon (Warsaw Gate mix) is amazing. We love those analogue patches and sequences, one day we might cover this song.’

This track is our favourite production featured in a movie…

I watch a lot of movies (we love John Carpenter and Tangerine Dream soundtracks) so it is hard for me to narrow down my choices to give an answer! These come to mind now though:

John Carpenter - Show Me

‘This is a moody track that works with the ominous vibe of the movie.’

Disasterpeace - Detroit

‘This has been very inspiring lately.’

Angelo Badalamenti - Theme from Fire Walk With Me

‘It holds a special place in my heart.’

A track from our favourite local artist…

Penelope Two-Five - She

‘Our favourite track by a local would have to be She by Penelope Two-Five. Very hypnotic live track. P25 are our The Space Between Us label mates, it is so great they are playing Bigsound with us as well. Going to be a crazy week!’

Our favourite Boards of Canada track…

Boards of Canada - Reach for the Dead

Geogaddi is an all-time favourite (album) for us. However, ‘Reach for the Dead’ stands out, it has an amazing arp that comes in towards the end, and the drum programming and pads are stellar too.’

A definite guilty pleasure…

Klaatu- Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft

’Not feeling so guilty because this song has some amazing structuring!
