Local Form: Eddie Example

We chat to the Mutant Dance head honcho Eddie Example…

Ten years ago Eddie honed his craft with a residency at Geelong’s most infamous Pub, The Nash. Through regular five-hour sets, he honed his DJ skills with journey inflected sets rarely encountered before in the town once dubbed Sleepy Hollow. Since then, he’s been hosting parties such as Mutant Dance, Tilt Shift and Sonic Therapy while holding down guest spots/residencies at Revolver Upstairs, Lucky Coq, Captain, Geelong Hotel, Xe54, New Guernica, Boney, The Gaso, Lounge and much more. His sound is inspired by Ron Hardy infused with Optimo - and given his broad, eclectic taste, his deejay sets are just as unpredictable.

Classic Track:

Depth Charge - Shaolin Buddha Finger (1995)

‘This jam has been close to my heart for a long time, it comes from the early days of trip-hop. J Saul Kane fuses crazy movie samples, raw percussion and an unforgettable bassline. A precursor to Wu-Tang some might say, I highly recommend anything he does under his many guises.‘

Current Favourite:

Phil Kieran & Douglas McCarthy - Fall Rise (2019)

This came out in June last year, but it’s still in heavy rotation in my club sets. Featuring Nitzer Ebb lead vocalist Douglas McCarthy this track embodies the fine line between punk and dance music, which has always been close to my heart.’

First track I ever bought:

Austrofred - Eich Dodln Gib I Gas (2002)

Now just to clarify the first piece of music I ever bought was Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, but I’m going with the first DJ record I ever bought which was Dottores Kranky Disco Band ‎’Street Beat 79’. I bought it for two reasons": Monte Cazazza’s ‘Sex Is No Emergency’ and this crazy German cover version of Queen’s ‘Another One Bites The Dust’. When I got the record I found out all of the tracks were killer.
