Sydney based rising talent Tangela pulls some tracks out of her collection to keep on your radar…

Alumni of Sydney’s FBi Dance Class, Tangela is slowly making a name for herself as one of our capital city’s most exciting new names. With her musical taste rooted in UK garage, electronic, techno, and deep house, she showcases her varied musical output on guest mixes for FBi Radio and via her Douglas Street imprint. Dedicated to uncovering the breadth of Sydney’s music scene, Douglas Street which she co-founded with her housemates, showcases weekly live streams and mixes, from a quaint Sydney based back yard.

Just as likely to hear a bright and bubbly house track as a heavily distorted glitched out techno track, Tangela ducks and weaves between opposing genres with ease. No doubt, she’ll make you feel simultaneous like you’re in a heaving CBD nightclub, or sitting back in her Douglas Street garden, enjoying a frosty beer with friends. Buckle in and take note, as Tangela picks three tracks that have influenced the artist she is today.

FIRST:

Traumer - Gonna Get [GETTRAUM ‎– GRHS001] (2017)

‘If I go back and track my love affair with electronic music, Groove Armada’s ‘Superstylin’ was one of my gateway’s into dance music. I used to rinse this on repeat from Dad’s CD collection at age 12. But if I pinpoint the track that made me jump on the decks it was ‘Gonna Get’ by Traumer

This track has all my favourite things bundled into one: a driving minimal baseline, rolling percussion and strong, uplifting fem vocals. The combination is so euphoric and impossible not to dance to. It’s not something you just sway side to side to, it requires your absolute best, full-bodied dance moves. The whole crowd was stomping around to those tribal drums, pulling stank faces when Traumer dropped this at Subsonic a few years ago. It’s a moment I’ll never forget and pushed me to start learning how to DJ. I played this at my very first house party set so it will always be close to my heart.’

CLASSIC:

Jhelisa - Friendly Pressure [Sunship From Midnight Mix] (1994)

‘I have such a soft spot for UKG, my classic or ‘secret weapon’ folder mostly consists of 90’s garage or trancey stuff. Really nostalgic tracks that make you smile. I’ll forever have this one on rotation, it’s bouncy, boppy, cheeky and a little bit sexy. As the lyrics suggest, it’s the perfect early morning / sunrise track.’

CURRENT:

Silat Beksi & Daniel Broesecke - Feedback [UVARLTD004] (2020)

‘This was almost impossible to pick but I keep going back to this one lately. It’s a slow build, quiet banger. A deep, rolling minimal track that you can really ease into and leaves you wanting more. It's perfect for a dreamy, spacious, afternoon set in a leafy outdoor paradise or time spent alone, walking somewhere, in no particular rush with this as the soundtrack to your daydreams.’
