the feel-good song we’ve all been waiting for…

If you’re craving an anthem to represent your impending emergence from the captivity of self-isolation, then boy do we have the tune for you. Our favourite Canadian selector and possibly the happiest person in the world, Jayda G has teamed up with British artist Fred Again.. on a brand new EP to be released in on Ninja Tune in July. The debut track from the dreamy collaboration titled 'Both Of Us’ can only be described as a romantic and boppy deep house banger with sprinklings of disco. Try not dancing to this one. Go on, try.

If you’ve ever been fortunate enough to witness a set from Jayda G in the flesh (or perhaps you’ve replayed her 2017 Dekmantel Boiler Room too many times to count), you’ll know that one of the most incredible things about Jayda is her energy, and inhibition to let loose behind the decks. Renowned for cutting shapes harder than anyone in the room, and singing along to every song she plays, Jayda G undoubtedly has an ‘it’ factor, that’s unparalleled. Describing her collaboration with Fred again.. Jayda explains ‘working with Fred is great, because I can just be my dorky self, and not worry about being judged’.

A huge follow up to her 2019 album Significant Changes, this long-awaited release moves away from the funk and soul sounds Jayda aligned herself with in the past, identifying as the duo’s energetic take on pop music. An uplifting power chord progressions maintain the warm and feel-good mood that the song presents, instantly transporting you to memories of a night spent on the town with your best mates. Featuring soft female vocals that repeat “I just want to be with you”, the song is accompanied by a dreamy video clip featuring home footage of Jayda G with friends, at gigs, and just generally exuding a magnetic optimism for life.

My personal favourite moment within ‘Both Of Us’ is the slow breakdown in the middle of the song. It sees the track played at half speed and features a slow clap from whatever crowd, group, or singular person is listening. If you’re listening to it alone in your bedroom, then yes, you still need to clap along. All in all, this one might just be the track of the European summer. Kudos Jayda and Fred.
