LISTEN: The Latest From Fergus Sweetland Is An Exercise In Rhythm

It features six tracks that will make you go Bomph….

Australia isn't that known for its wealth of techno podcasts, but a local one consistently on point is Melbourne's Bomphcast. The man behind the series is Fergus Sweetland, a Melbourne DJ who also hosts club nights focussing on the headier side of techno. As if he needs more activities to fill his time, he produces mind-melting techno too, his latest an EP on Portuguese label Hayes Collective.

Across six tracks, you will hear a sound that operates on a unique frequency. It's an elastic world where bass lines flit and sounds combust and contracts. It all makes for a highly disorientating listen and challenges your expectations of rhythm and groove. As Fergus points out, this is something he aimed for: "Groove, in my opinion, is the key element to great techno music. It has the power to make us dance without having to think about it. Humans have been boogying to drum beats for thousands of years, so our response to groove is natural and instilled. I want this EP to be a contemporary celebration of our tribalistic past."

Get your head around it.
