MUSIC: RITA BASS Rolls Out Remixes

Rita Bass rolls out new remixes from Hyphira, In2stellar and more…

Thank you, RITA BASS for introducing us to our new favourite word. Apophenia is 'the tendency to perceive a connection or meaningful pattern between unrelated or random things' AKA social media in general, especially during the pandemic. RELEVANT MUCH?! It's also the name of her debut released at the start of 2021, a jerky breakbeat flirting between late-night cyber-pop and silvery drum n bass. Accompanied by 'Shaped Curve', more fractured fun that goes from garage to drum n bass in 0-0.6 seconds, it hailed the arrival of a singular voice exploring dance music’s more left-field fringes. Now that package is being feathered even further with a remix package that is… well… excuse my French… fucking dope.

'Apophenia' receives two re-rubs, both squarely aimed at the dancefloor. Sydney-based artist AHJU turns in an uplifting version that pays homage to the halcyon days of rave and jungle. Sitting somewhere between illegal ‘95 Orbital rave and contemporary legal warehouse party, it's a strong contender for the standout remix - a pretty legit take that should open the producer to more ears. With their 10-minute take, Hyphira shows that electronic music is an amorphous and nebulous concept. Boundaries? What boundaries?! It's an adventurous ride through hardstyle, old-school Goa trance and electronica all connected via an outrageous four-minute breakdown/buildup. Bloody outrageous, yet… totally fabulous? If this were the winning track at Eurovision, you wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Did you say you would like three different versions of ‘Shaped Curve’? Don’t worry, Rita’s got ya covered. Canada's Korea Town Acid turns the original into an avant-garde fever dream that sits just on the right side of full-blown night terrors. The bass and percussion slide and melt all over the place like a drunken sailor trying to find their balance. Fellow Canuck Ciel's intricate take manages to coax every drop of emotion from the original. Complex drum programming, ethereal melodies and haunting vocal loops all add up for an impressive piece of production from the consistently remarkable producer. Rapidly graduating from rising stars to leading ladies, In2stellar turns in a delicious spacey take complete with galactic fx and stuttering vocals. Sourced straight from Melbourne's breakbeat heydeys, it's a downright dirty demon that will give shine to the dullest of dancefloors. Alliteration is fun - and so is this EP. ☝🏿
