A street rave in the heart of Brunswick…

Melbourne has been on point recently. With clubs packed out since lockdowns ended, the vibe all round has been miiiiint. We might be the only city in the world as open as we are. I mean, Sydney’s kinda open, but they still have dance restrictions. (But as someone cheekily pointed out to me recently, those restrictions are arbitrary as no one in Sydney was dancing before COVID lel). So while the rest of the world awaits for the vaccinations to kick in so they can open the clurbs, we are already knee-deep in a plethora of cool shit. The upcoming Beat Repeat being one example.

Honeysmack behind the control decks…

If you live in Brunswick, prepare yourself for a banging street party that is just looking all-time. Just off Sydney Road, nestled between Victoria and Albert Street, lies Russell Street, an inconspicuous looking alley that will be home to a full day’s programming of dance music. Think of it as a block party celebrating our fair city’s rich electronic music history. It will feature some of our city’s best selectors, which includes a bevy of deadset legends. If you were around to experience the city’s rave heyday, the name of Honeysmack should give you a sweet hit of acid reminiscence. Responsible for soundtracking a whole generation of Melbourne shufflers, he might be Melbourne’s most decorated exponent of Live Acid Techno (all caps mate). His music is so dangerous it should come with a warning: approach with caution and enjoy responsibly. Leading the lineup, however, is Melbourne’s current king of revival trance and bona fide vinyl purist, Papa Smurf. His DJ sets are so packed with personality you don’t know where the man begins and the music ends. (For a vibe check out our 2020 interview with him here, or this fresh series of video interviews he recently did with Beat Repeat). This time around, Papa will be swapping his uplifting trance euphoria for an old-school classic house set, a mouth-watering prospect indeed. But look, there are defs more to this than just those two acts, so check out the lineup below and get your tickets now as this looks bloody legit.
