FAST 10: WISER

WISER - Press-Pic.jpeg

Revolver Upstairs Recordings
is back to warm your cockles with a heater of a release from one of the more singular local artists…

DAZED HDT (HARD DANCE THERAPY) boss WISER has been pushing a form of techno that is a logical extension of her own style and self-expression. That spirit of individualism is an ethos she champions at DAZED HDT, encouraging guests and artists to go with the flow and, in the words of our Lord Saviour Madonna, EXPRESS YOURSELF.

For WISER, that means 'blending her love of throbbing sub-bass, punchy kicks and atmospheric synth sounds with the occasional dark psychedelic twist'. That paints quite a picture, but then again, Wiser is not your usual artist. With a fashion sense that sits somewhere between techno Pennywise and a gothic Dune freedom fighter, it is hard not to pay attention. That confidence also shines through in everything she does. And for someone like, let's say me, who is scared of wearing shorts because of my skinny legs that I'm sure everyone will point at and laugh, that could-not-give-a-fuck energy is a confidence I crave. So yeah, we're here for it, so much so that we had to dig deeper. And if you’re feeling all bush doof techno-like, make sure to go support the new release…

1. Three words to describe my music:

Nostalgic, Ethereal, Cheeky?!

2. A female artist everyone should know:

Anetha (DJ, producer, label owner and new mama): The perfect blend of trance, techno and pure feminine energy.

3. A track I’m embarrassed to love:

I don’t get embarrassed easily and I feel like all music tastes are valid; with that said, I am an absolute sucker for ABBA, any eighties music & have been known to play the occasional Macarena bootleg... Oh and I strongly believe that Linkin Park - Meteora is one of the best albums of all time.

4. The local industry needs more:

Venues in general, food at parties, 24hr liquor licenses, stickers over phone cameras, big stage time slots at major festivals (we have sooooo much world-class talent here!)

5. My drink of choice at a gig:

‘My quintessential chocolate Up & Go I have to smuggle in so I can party for longer.’

6. What empowers me:

When the way I curate music gives people goosebumps or makes them cry.

7. The best gig I’ve ever played:

‘I was recently flown up to Queensland to perform at Earth Frequency Festival. I had the honour of closing the main stage on the Sunday evening, playing for one of my favourite labels, Open Records. I had curated such a special, intentional, dark and magic set; and it was so well received by the thousands of wonderful humans I shared it with. It was other-worldly.

8. If I wasn’t in the music industry, I would be:

‘Feeling rather lost, creatively. After a workplace injury changed the trajectory of my life (most likely for the better; it led me to focus on music) I have learnt to go with the flow, and dream big - I am so grateful for the life I now live. I am currently studying community services and would love to do youth work in the future.

9. Someone I look up to is:

Mike Toner ( Thick as Thieves ) One of the best minds and biggest hearts in the industry. Does everything with kindness, supports the community and humanity in general through his dedication to fundraising, his attention to detail and his ability to execute even the wildest of ideas gives me hope for the future. He inspires me to nurture this brain of mine and to continue facilitating positive dancefloor experiences.

10. The best piece of advice I ever received:

“Be good, if not - don’t get caught.“
