MUSIC: Female Wizard Casts Massive Techno Spell

Female Wizard announces first single to be taken from her upcoming debut album…

If you’ve seen her 2019 set for Boiler Room (Sydney), you would know Female Wizard operates within a space that is purely her own. (Treat yourself and read our interview with her). Chaotic, sharp and at times straight-up challenging, it’s music that demands your attention. Idly standing by and ignoring it is nigh impossible. From blunted IDM rhythms to psychedelic NRG to straight-up strange, sometimes all in one track, her discography is littered with an array of experimental explorations. However, her new single might be the most straight-laced dance tune she’s released so far - and by god, we hope there will be more.

From the opening moments of the sine-wave-stitched hard-step intro, it builds into 4/4 fuckery which feels way more techno than expected. It's hard, slightly psychedelic and pounds like a sledgehammer. But it's the bonkers breakdown and its fever dream melody, which combines with the biggest, craziest drop you'll hear this year, making this 100% sweaty. It is the sound of Alice stumbling through the looking glass and onto the Berghain main floor - a complete meltdown and exorcism whilst still managing to be euphoric. But as Female Wizard explains that antithetical nature is by design: "As is true with a lot of my music, it sits inside a middle space, taking two contradictory opinions at once." If 'Post Release' is anything to go by, she's starting to feel very comfortable in that space.

'Post-Release' out now. Taken from the upcoming album 'TIE-EE-YIE-EEYIE-EE-YIME' out September 3rd through Heavy Machinery Records.
