Erol Alkan Is Back With Some Silver Echoes
Erol Alkan returns with his first single in over half a decade…
Whenever Phantasy Records release music it is cause for celebration, but whenever it announces a new one from Erol Alkan, it’s time to take the day off work and really give it a nudge. It’s been a while since the Phantasy co-owner released a single, in fact, it has been five years.
That’s not to say he’s been sitting idly on his hands in that time, this news follows a busy few months for him: recent reworks for Depeche Mode, Todd Terje and Gerd Janson & Philip Lauer’s Tuff City Kids; mixing new albums for Daniel Avery and Gabe Gurnsey (read our review of that effort here); producing seminal shoegaze band Ride, and last year’s Reworks Volume 1 album, a career-spanning collection of 20 of Alkan’s best-loved remixes.
The new single ‘Silver Echoes’ is a delightful ride through crackling and colourful synths, and although it’s a relatively simple ride its an effective one. It’s a little reminiscent of The Chemical Brothers’ ‘Star Guitar’, but BETTER, it’s melody more restrained and muted. As Alkan puts it: ’Silver Echoes' has that thread of melancholy which seems to manifest itself in much of what I do.’
