Six For One: Harvey McKay

Harvey-McKay.jpg

One of Scotland's finest talks tunes ahead of his Australian tour...

If you have a passing interest in techno you would have heard about Drumcode Recordings, the ubiquitous imprint started by Adam Beyer. If you have a passing interest in geography, you would have heard of Glasgow, that is the Scottish city current Australian visitor Harvey McKay is from.

McKay's techno pedigree is such that international dance music bible Mixmag described him as ‘probably the techno pages most regular contributor’. His tracks are always hot property, and to date, on Beatport, he boasts of having three number one tracks on their Techno chart, and nine top ten releases. He was also their fourth highest selling techno artist of 2014. And of course, those tracks are released on labels most producers only dream of being associated with: Drumcode. Cocoon, Bedrock, Intec, Soma and most recently We Are The Brave.

He is currently in Australia for a couple of dates which include the huge Day Doof event at Pawn & Co. (which looks set for a sell out so get your ticket now if you are looking to doof during the day. At Pawn & Co). We asked the Scottish producer to run his through six tracks which have played a vital role in his career to date. Much fun.

THE TRACK THAT GOT ME INTO TECHNO:

Joey Beltram ‘The Feature’

'This is such a great track man. It still stands up for me today, that filtered funk techno energy is the cat's pyjamas.'

MY FIRST EVENT RELEASE?

Powder From The Gods [Perc Trax]

'This was back in 2006 or 2007 I think. It seems so long ago and yet not at the same time. It's crazy how time flies!'

THE TRACK CURRENTLY RECEIVING THE BIGGEST RESPONSE IN MY SETS

DJ Shufflemaster ‘Re:Weekend’ (Gary Beck Remix)

'Been rating this track in every set for the past 6/7 months ever since I got it. It just works every time and it’s such a belter.'

MY FAVOURITE APEX TWIN TRACK

Ageispolis

'It has the real 90’s ravey vibe to it. The tons of textures and tones are immense on this track, and they just vibrate right through you every time you hear it.'

MY FAVOURITE TRACK ON SOMA RECORDINGS

Gary Beck - Before The Crash

'Another great one from Beckatron! I think he almost lost this one when his computer died, hence the title of the track. ☺ I am glad he didn't lose it!'

IF I COULD ONLY PLAY YOU ONE PINK FLOYD TRACK IT WOULD BE

Great Gig In The Sky

'The female singing solo on this is just so haunting and touching. It has a touch of euphoric sadness to it, it’s just beautiful!'
