As an avid fan of going to “cool” gigs and also listening to “uncool” Top 40 bangers, you shouldn't be surprised to hear that I naturally gravitate toward the elusive art of remixes. Yes, I’d virtually froth at the mouth for a mainstream track re-imagined for a gritty underground club context (think anything with Kylie or Britney). There’s a certain je ne said quoi about a tastefully crafted remix that momentarily unites the complex cornucopia that is the global music industry. The latest heroine to venture into the art of remixing one of the world’s greatest pop icons Miss Britney Spears, is Melbourne artist Ella Tayla AKA Yollks.
One-third of Melbourne label Fluxx, this latest release from Yollks comes amongst a career hot streak which has seen Elle release tracks ‘Rotate’ and ‘dude’ in 2020, alongside guest mixes on Skylab Radio and Neurocrank. Bringing some lightness into the darkened cluster-fuck that is 2020, Yollks has bequeathed unto us a remix of Britney’s iconic hit ‘Break The Ice’ titled ‘Britney Biche’. The 4 and a half minute re-work comes as one in a 9 track compilation released by Red Room Recordings, to raise money for UNICEF’s Yemen Crisis Campaign. With 100% of profits from the release going to the Yemen Crisis, there’s honestly never been a better reason to get down with Britney.
Aligned with her tightly curated fast-paced output of techno/electro, the remix features unrelenting distorted 808-esque percussion, an evolving acid bassline, and some filtered sampled vocals a la Britney.
