Local Form: Pretty Girl

For fans of emotional lo-fi and glittery ambient house music…

Over the past 2 years, Emilia Predebon AKA Pretty Girl has slowly opened the doors to her affinity with dance music. Pretty Girl produces dreamy, deep house numbers, alongside DJing of course. Her sound is more aimed at vibe than a particular tone; her track choices below evidence of an artist not bound to a specific sound. And if consider that her repertoire recently expanded to include a full live performance, she is undoubtedly a Melbourne producer/DJ to pay attention to…

Classic:

Orbital - Halcyon On and On [1993]

To me, this is easily one of the top 5 best electronic songs ever made. SUCH. A. TUNE. It has everything I love; a big trancey bassline, a breathy vocal on repeat throughout, and beautiful atmospheric pads. I’ve never played it, I feel it’s one of those songs you need to save for a special moment.

Current:

Private Press - Credit (Resochords Dub) [2018]

I’ve been obsessed with this song recently. I love ambient techno, especially in its lush and energetic forms like this song. The way the fat kick contrasts with the beautiful top synths gives the song such a nice balance. And the classic cymbal pattern that comes in halfway through gives it that real 90s techno feel.

First:

Leon Vynehall - Blush [2016]

Besides the fact that this song is a banger, I love it because it reminds me so much of my introduction to dance music. I found it on Youtube when I was in Year 12, and I listened to it exclusively when walking in or out of the State Library. At the time, no one around me listened to dance music, and I was too young to go to clubs/festivals, so this song was a completely different and new sound to me. I didn’t start making proper dance music or DJing until years later, but I think this was my gateway song.
