LOCAL FORM: Afrodisiac

Local selector Afrodisiac selects three tracks that have influenced her sound…

Exploring the varied and off-kilter complexities of dance music, Gabby aka Afrodisiac champions herself as a selective risk-taker. Unafraid to jump from the 90s influenced UK garage track, to a percussive grooving worldly rhythm interspersed with harmony-heavy RnB tracks, Afrodisiac’s signature sound is one that’s naturally evolving.

Through contributions to a plethora of Melbourne’s mix institutions Skylab, Area 3000, Waiting For Utopia and Verve, Afrodisiac is garnering a dedicated following amongst the local industries’ die-hard fans. Jumping on board as one of the brains behind the WIP Project, Afrodisiac’s involvement in the community extends beyond her selective prowess, continually championing female, non-binary and GNC artists for more exposure. Delving deeper into the world of music production, Afrodisiac solidified her place as an artist with her remix of the best song in the history of the world, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion song ‘WAP’. Honestly iconic.

Taking time out from kicking career goals, Afrodisiac picked out some tracks she loves for the latest instalment of Local Form

FIRST:

Bob Sinclair - World, Hold On (Children of the Sky) [2006]

‘Hearing ‘World, Hold On (Children of the Sky)’ by Bob Sinclair and Steve Edwards is one of my earliest memories of being enchanted by dance music. Today when I hear this song, it still makes me feel a spectrum of emotions. I remember being fascinated and inspired by the music video and lyrics as a teen. Today I can’t help but want to dance and sing along at the top of my voice when I hear it. The melody is ultra-catchy, and it’s the type of track to bring together a room of strangers.’

CLASSIC:

Stars on 54 - If You Could Read My Mind (1998)

‘If You Could Read My Mind by Stars on 54 is another feel-good house track that teleports me to many happy moments throughout my life. My connection to this song is again probably heavily influenced by the number of times I’ve viewed the video clip, which still resonates with me today from the ever-cool club setting, powerful femme energy and killer styling.’

CURRENT:

UNIIQU3 - CUMMIN FOR COMMA$ (2020)

‘CUMMIN FOR COMMA$ is one of the more recent releases by UNIIQU3 that I’ve been bumping to. I’m obsessed with her production of high tempo jersey club tracks that utilise hypnotising drum lines, rhythms and catchy looped vocals. I’ve been dancing to this at home and looking forward to transporting this track’s energy to an IRL dance floor ASAP in 2021. This song from a production side majorly inspires me, and I often seek out informative tutorial videos by UNIIQU3.’
