Local Form: Emelexy

From Sade to ‘The Matrix’, Emelexy lets us in on the musical influences that have shaped him…

Emelexy is a name you would know if you’re in the know. Rubbing shoulders with Melbourne crews Whitvoir, Neurocrank and Upstairs//Downstairs, Emelexy comes from a group of forward-thinking artists currently dominating the local scene. His own musical stylings fit a similar mould. Characterised by spaced-out, thoughtfully curated downtempo, ambient, Balearic, and experimental, a mix from Emelexy can be categorised as music curated for thoughtful and deep contemplation. With years of booking experience within the local scene, his participation within the industry is credit to his informed knowledge about the inner workings of Melbourne’s music scene. Dedicated to curating spaces that champion community, freedom of expression, and pushing genre boundaries, his sonic palette shares this sentiment.

On the cusp of launching his brand new record label and a forthcoming EP in 2022, Emelexy join us for the next instalment of Local Form, sharing with us 3 tracks that have shaped him.

FIRST

Matrix Reloaded Freeway Chase

’In retrospect, the music that I find have impacted me most, began with appreciating the unexpected structure or moments from a whole range of genres. These short spells of difference in what I was listening to were like clues to a deeper recognition I was still deaf to. A tripped out vocal, a foreign instrument, or an unthinkable sound would grab my excitement and sometimes I wished for more genres, oblivious to the fact they were out there. As this was unfolding in the background something then clicked, changing things for me more permanently. I was staying up late watching ‘Reloaded’ for the first time, my face practically touching the TV when this soundtrack invaded me. The ever-changing meld of symphony and heated proggy rhythms made me feel like everything I’d heard before was linear, the boundaries vanished, I saw the Matrix!’

CLASSIC

Audiomatrixx - ‘P6’

'This piece checks out so many levels. I love its complexity, yet it has such a simple structure. It's both relaxed and fierce - smooth out effortless: I call it a 'starburst production'. Furthermore, the album's artwork is one of my favourites, perfectly emphasising its sound. On another level, I like that this track feels rare and untouched; released in 2008, it appears to have minimal traction for its kind. Whilst' P6' in particular, I feel like I've heard in a past life, the rest of the album is incredible and has something in it for everyone. 'Variations' is profoundly detailed and, in my opinion, a forgotten gem of the music world. The album explores an amazing style in trance that's distinguished but mystically nostalgic, and being the only album the duo ever produced together, it leaves me with so many questions.'

CURRENT

Desire / Sade - No ordinary love (Paul Hardcastle Remix)

' I always get obsessed with Hardcastle tracks, and at the moment, it's this one. His productions are stunning, rich with details, and so fluent. This song is unreleased and only exists in a few internet domains. My understanding is that whilst it was done "for fun", the remix was denied an official release on Hardcastle's latest album due to copyright issues. Though unfortunate, I love that it's made this track 'ultra-rare', and it could disappear from the web at any time. Knowing both original tracks pre-mashup, I think he retains the charm from both songs but at the same time advances into a refreshing piece of his own. It's gorgeous! I'll be kicking back to this all summer :)'
