LOCAL FORM: Sam Alfred

Sam Alfred is a name to watch out for…

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of the name Sam Alfred by now. The local-based fresh-faced music producer and DJ hails from Tasmania, but his recent move to Melbourne has seen him fall hard and fast for dance music. And what a love affair it has been. Sam’s inevitable journey into creating music of his own has produced a truly exquisite result, turning many heads in the process and landing on everyone’s list of favourite local releases.

His debut release comes in the form of a 6-track EP Strictly Business via Melbourne based Love Above Records. The result is a supercharged journey through jazz tipped house music, reminiscent of early 00’s deep house, and optimal for the club. Think Jacques Renault, DJ Deep, Cinthie, or early Motor City Drum Ensemble. Simply put, it’s elegant as fuck. With multiple EP’s and string of gigs/releases scheduled for the coming months, Sam Alfred is making quick work of carving out a space for himself within the industry. We mean it when we say he’s going places. Taking time out of his chaotic schedule, Sam Alfred shared with us three songs that have shaped his sound today.

Sit up straight and take note… you're in the presence of genius with Mr Alfred so you’d best pay attention.

FIRST

DJOKO - ‘WASHED AWAY’

‘When I first moved from Tasmania to Melbourne, I found that my taste in music changed as I was being exposed to so many different types of music, one night I remember I was at Xe54 and the DJ mixed into this song and I heard the bass line which immediately captured my attention, as the song was playing I noticed so many different stabs and leads flowing throughout the song which kept the song very interesting, after I thought the song was perfect in comes these beautiful strings and lead melody, which made me really fall in love with this track. It is one of the most interesting songs I have heard, and it really inspired me whilst learning how to produce.’

CLASSIC

FLUME - ‘SLEEPLESS’

‘This is the song that introduced me to electronic music, I remember going on my mum's iPad and buying the whole album, and this was the song that really captured my attention. The vocals, bassline and spacey synths just sounded so new and cool at the time. This isn’t a song I’d play in my sets but a song I listen to a lot.’

CURRENT

ROZA TERENZI & D.TIFFANY - ‘MAYPOLE THEME (SURREALIST PIANO MIX)’

‘I’ve been listening to this almost every day. I’ve been loving UK garage recently and this song is just crazy, it has groovy drums and three different bass lines which is something you don’t hear often, it also has a smooth piano in it which compliments the track perfectly.’
